Janet M. Guthmiller, D.D.S., Ph.D.
 
Dr. Janet Guthmiller was named the ninth Dean of the College of Dentistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and began her appointment September 1, 2014.
 
Dr. Guthmiller earned her A.A. in Dental Hygiene from the University of South Dakota, her B.A. from Northwestern College, her D.D.S. from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and her Periodontal Certificate and Ph.D. in Cellular and Structural Biology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as a part of the NIH-sponsored Dentist-Scientist Program.
 
Prior to her appointment as Dean at the College of Dentistry, Dr. Guthmiller served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor in the Department of Periodontology at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.  Her primary responsibilities in this role included administrative oversight of the educational programs (dental assisting, dental hygiene, dental, advanced education and graduate) and approximately 560 students including: recruitment, admissions, matriculation, advancement, curricula, accreditation and outcomes assessment, student affairs and student services, compliance, as well as instructional technology and faculty development.
  
Dr. Guthmiller has been the recipient of collegiate, university and national teaching and mentoring awards, including the Faculty Mentor of the Year from the National Student Research Group of the American Association for Dental Research in 2007.  In 2015, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from Northwestern College and in 2016 the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Cellular and Structural Biology program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.  She has mentored over 40 students, many of whom have received national research awards and leadership recognition.  Dr. Guthmiller is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a Fellow in the International College of Dentists and American College of Dentists, a Commission Consultant for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and recently completed a five-year tenure as Associate Editor for Oral Health at MedEdPORTAL Publications.
