CAREER DAY AT SKINNER MAGNET CENTER

The Community Service Committee has scheduled a Career Day at Skinner Magnet Center Elementary School on Wednesday, October 26th. The committee is seeking volunteers from all professions. Volunteers will be asked to attend a brief informational meeting at Rotary and will visit with small groups of 5th grade students for short sessions from 12:30 - 3:00 p.m. on October 26th. Sign-up sheets will be available at noon Rotary meetings.

Rotary Readers - Volunteer Opportunity

The Rotary Readers program is in progress. Members volunteer to help develop reading skills with grade school students one-on-one. You are invited to become a Rotary Reader. Why? Three quick reasons: you will enjoy meeting and working with a couple of kids who need your help; studies show children who can’t read well in second grade will almost certainly drop out of school and cost you a lot of tax dollars, and Skinner Magnet Center is our adopt-a-school partner and they are looking for help and support from our club.

Interested? Contact Don Otis (Donaldotis@mac.com) to get started with this project. Typically, readers spend an hour and work with two students each visit. The visits can be weekly or bi-weekly (or whatever your schedule allows), typically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays during school hours.

Reading with the 2nd and 3rd students is a great volunteer opportunity. Join Don Otis, Susan Thomas and others who are already reading at the school.

Are You Interested in Working With Youth? - Volunteer for RYLA

Tom Cardwell, who has been organizing the RYLA camps is seeking additional volunteers. Please see his request below and contact information if you would like to volunteer for RYLA.

We have now conducted a RYLA Leadership camp for 5 years. It in many respects has gone quite well. Our particular camp focus is on high school sophomores and juniors who aspire to leadership positions/responsibilities. We are holding a discussion and planning session on Sunday Nov. 6th from 4:30 till 6:00. It is a plea for some volunteers who enjoy working with high school young people.

Our camp has traditionally been held in April and it will be similar this year. It is held at Camp Kitaki (south of interstate 80 near Louisville state recreation area). I am writing because we need to expand the leadership of the camp. What I mean to say is that we need a few good people willing to serve a term (3 years) and be willing to take on one of several responsibilities.

The camp to be successful requires several things.

1) Developing a camp itinerary (organizing the day and finding plenary speakers)

2) Recruiting high school students

3) Clubs selecting high school students to sponsor ($200 per student)

4) Receiving and forwarding money from clubs to the District treasurer

5) A registrar to organize student files, make sure appropriate forms are received, check in students

6) A person to manage the actual camp (a long weekend starting Friday afternoon and ending Sunday at 1:00.

7) A person to conduct an evaluation

8) a person to print name tags and graduation certificates.

The camp is a lot of fun but we have only been able to manage to recruit approximately 40-45 students each year. We would like to grow the camp. It has potential to serve many more young people. I would like to see 200 students but would be happy with 80-100 in the current format.

Chris Klingenberg (Lincoln East Rotary Past President and District Youth Services Chair) and I are working together to try and expand the pool of volunteers and leaders willing to grow this program. If you were to Google other Rotary Districts RYLA programs some are quite spectacular serving 300 students over the course of a week.

POLIO ERADICATION – We are asking you to donate $32 during the month your birthday is recognized. The District has set $32 per person as a giving goal for PolioPlus. Your donation will be given to The Rotary Foundation in your name for PolioPlus. Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of polio for over 30 years. The PolioPlus program helps Rotary fund operational costs, such as transportation, vaccine delivery, social mobilization, and training of health workers, and support surveillance activities. Your donation can help "End Polio Now."

Schedule A Vocational Talk

Gretchen Radler, Vocational Service Committee Chair, will be contacting members to schedule a vocational talk. We would like to schedule two vocational talks each month. Your talk should be 2-3 minutes in length and will give you an opportunity to share information about your profession, yourself and your family. Please say yes when asked to schedule your vocational talk. We look forward to learning more about our fellow Rotarians.

Corporate & Family Membership Program

The West Rotary Board approved a Corporate & Family Membership program. An Active Primary club member can propose a qualified family member or a qualified business co-worker for membership. The membership proposal has information in regard to membership qualifications on the form. The new corporate or family member joining will pay dues of $125 with no admission fee. If the primary member resigns one of the corporate or family members will become the primary member and pay the appropriate primary membership fee. The reduced dues rate of $125.00 will be effective the first three years of membership. Click here to see the membership proposal form and flyer for the new program. Members, if you have a qualified family member or co-worker please invite them to Rotary for lunch so they can consider joining West Rotary.

WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS - Documentary

Remarkable CNN Hero Razia Jan founded a school for girls in Afghanistan in the face of tremendous pressure to not do so. She has given hope and a brighter future to the 450 girls enrolled in her school.

Rotary District 5650 would like to issue a special invitation to all Rotarians, their families, and friends of Rotary to view a life-changing documentary that tells the powerful story of the students and teachers at the all-girls Zabuli Education Center. Proceeds from this event will help fund this remarkable project

"What Tomorrow Brings" is being presented as an exclusive film viewing and fundraiser. It will be aired nationally on PBS on October 31^st.
