Golf Fundraiser is next Thursday, August 20th. Remember, the Fundraising Committee goal is 100% club member participation. Raffle drawing will be held September 18th. Raffle tickets will be sold at the noon Rotary meetings on August 28th, September 4th, 11th and 18th with the drawing for prizes on September 18th. On 11 August, we marked a tremendous milestone: one full year without a single case of polio caused by wild poliovirus in Africa.
The magnitude of this achievement can hardly be overstated. A polio-free Africa has been within sight, so near and yet so far, for over a decade. The hard work and commitment that have brought us to this point have been nothing short of heroic. Tens of thousands of health workers reached hundreds of millions of children with vaccine, in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Together, we have done what once seemed impossible: We have stopped polio in Africa.
Yet this progress, momentous as it is, is still fragile. As long as polio exists in the two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the virus still has the potential to spread and to spark new outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need the power of all of Rotary to carry us through to the end: not just a polio-free Africa, but a polio-free world.
The Iowa Mission of Mercy is coming to the Mid-America Center September 11th and 12th this year. It is a major event for the metro area where over 200 dentists come to town and do as much free dental work over the course of two days as they can. People will be coming from across the states of Iowa and Nebraska to receive free dental care. In years past, we have seen over 1,500 patients and done over $1 million of free dental work. It travels from city to city in Iowa and it has never been to Council Bluffs before. The Council Bluffs Mayor and Wendy Schultz have been instrumental in making this come to fruition, and now they would like to enlist the help of the rest of the Rotary district members.
Dentists in Rotary clubs around the metro - if they don't have an Iowa license, they can get a free temporary license at the website below to volunteer. In addition to recruiting dentists from around Iowa and Nebraska, they will need a couple hundred general volunteers as well to make this a success. General volunteers would assist in child care, food service, escorting patients, patient registration, conducting exit interviews, runners, waiting area monitors, setting up, and tearing down, to name a few things. Rotary members are encouraged to participate in this event and help people in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area get a healthier mouth! Fire Apparatus Engineer Brent Van Scoy, Lt. James Pauly, John Morey
Firefighter Brent Van Scoy and Lt. James Pauly were both honored last Friday at the noon Rotary luncheon meeting for their outstanding service in their respective departments. Fire Chief Kanger spoke on behalf of Firefighter Van Scoy and Lt. Darci Tierney spoke on behalf of Lt. Pauly. Congratulations to both recipients!

POLIO ERADICATION – We are asking you to donate $32 during the month your birthday is recognized. The District has set $32 per person as a giving goal for PolioPlus. Your donation will be given to The Rotary Foundation in your name for PolioPlus. Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of polio for over 30 years. The PolioPlus program helps Rotary fund operational costs, such as transportation, vaccine delivery, social mobilization, and training of health workers, and support surveillance activities. Your donation can help "End Polio Now."
Gretchen Radler, Vocational Service Committee Chair, will be contacting members to schedule a vocational talk. We would like to schedule two vocational talks each month. Your talk should be 2-3 minutes in length and will give you an opportunity to share information about your profession, yourself and your family. Please say yes when asked to schedule your vocational talk. We look forward to learning more about our fellow Rotarians.
Bonnie Gill will be at home the next few weeks recovering from knee surgery. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back at Rotary soon.
Russ Iwan's wife, Renée, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Renée will have surgery on August 20th and will find out if she will need chemo following surgery. Russ has asked us to please keep Renée in our thoughts and prayers.
