Dr. Fred Ohles, President of Nebraska Wesleyan University, will be the keynote speaker at the 60th Annual Senior Recognition Day program that will be held on April 29th at Champions Run. JULIA FIKSINSKI, Brownell-Talbot School, was selected as the student speaker. Seniors from each of twenty-five area high schools will be honored at this special recognition program. Students, parents, counselors, principals, superintendents and guests will join us for the Senior Recognition Day program. Members and guests have the unique opportunity to meet and visit with these outstanding students.
Members please make your reservations at the noon Rotary meetings or email Vickie at the Rotary office vbackman@cox.net . Check-in will be from 11:30-11:45 a.m. and lunch served from 11:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Cost is $20.

Our club, with the help of Mindfulness practitioner and Rotarian Fran Kelly created Take 10 and Take 5 apps.These apps are FREE and have been downloaded in over 51 countries so far. There are two versions Take 10 for people in the teens and adulthood and Take 5 for children.
Research shows that when we train our mind to be present where our body is, that is when we are paying attention to what we are doing…. we are happier.
When we train our mind we develop awareness.
Do you often find yourself wishing that things were different to how they are?
Or perhaps feel worried, or anxious and you’re not sure exactly why?
Or do you have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep – you can’t seem to stop that constant flow of thoughts?
When we’re aware we notice how we feel, we notice what we’re thinking and we notice what we’re doing. We’re likely then to notice when we’re distracted, have better impulse control, be less angry, and be more aware of our thought processes with better concentration and memory. We’re likely too to be kinder, more patient and therefore more compassionate and caring of ourselves and others
So to perhaps be calmer, not feel so worried or be less reactive – that is be more aware of things as they are happening and therefore making better choices on the spot – then one of these Apps might be useful.
“Take 10 Mindful Minutes”, is a collection of short mind training or meditation strategies for users of all ages that could be helpful if you’ve answered yes to any of these questions.
“Take 5 Mindful Minutes”, is a collection of fun focused, short, mind training or meditation strategies that could be supportive for users under 10 years of age to practice with a helpful adult.

POLIO ERADICATION – We are asking you to donate $32 during the month your birthday is recognized. The District has set $32 per person as a giving goal for PolioPlus. Your donation will be given to The Rotary Foundation in your name for PolioPlus. Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of polio for over 30 years. The PolioPlus program helps Rotary fund operational costs, such as transportation, vaccine delivery, social mobilization, and training of health workers, and support surveillance activities. Your donation can help "End Polio Now."
The West Rotary Board approved a Corporate & Family Membership program. An Active Primary club member can propose a qualified family member or a qualified business co-worker for membership. The membership proposal has information in regard to membership qualifications on the form. The new corporate or family member joining will pay dues of $125 with no admission fee. If the primary member resigns one of the corporate or family members will become the primary member and pay the appropriate primary membership fee. BRAN 36: Open Spaces....Prairie Wind Tour

Registration information is available on the BRAN Website (www.bran-inc.org). The ride will start in Grant, Nebraska on Sunday, June 5th. The other overnight towns are North Platte, Broken Bow, Loup City, Central City, Humphrey, David City and ending in Wahoo, Nebraska with the Northwest Rotary rider reception on June 11th. BRAN 36 : Open Spaces....Prairie Wind Tour will be the 36th annual Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska organized by the Rotary Club of Omaha Northwest in cooperation with the Omaha Pedalers Bicycle Club.
A family fun event will be held on Thursday, June 9th at Jim Bachman's business location. A baseball field is available on site and other fun, games, etc. will be planned. Mark you calendars now. Additional details will be published when available.
A Rotary Wingding will be held at the home of Trudy Bredthauer. A new date for this event will be announced.
The Club’s award-winning Rotary Readers program is in action again. That’s the program where members give an hour a week to help develop reading skills with grade school students one-on-one. You are invited to become a Rotary Reader. Why? Three quick reasons: you will enjoy meeting and working with a couple of kids who need your help; studies show children who can’t read well in second grade will almost certainly drop out of school and cost you a lot of tax dollars, and Skinner Magnet Center is our adopt-a-school partner and they are looking for help and support from our club.
Interested? Contact Bob Fell (robertfell68@gmail.com) or Vickie Backman (vbackman@cox.net) and we will set up contact with the school. Typically, readers spend an hour and work with two students each visit. The visits can be weekly or bi-weekly (or whatever your schedule allows), typically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays during school hours.
Reading with the 2nd and 3rd students is a great volunteer opportunity. Don Otis is reading at the school twice a week and would be happy to introduce a new volunteer to the project and the teachers at the school.

Gretchen Radler, Vocational Service Committee Chair, will be contacting members to schedule a vocational talk. We would like to schedule two vocational talks each month. Your talk should be 2-3 minutes in length and will give you an opportunity to share information about your profession, yourself and your family. Please say yes when asked to schedule your vocational talk. We look forward to learning more about our fellow Rotarians.
