Last week, John Morey filled in as President. Along with Secretary Nick Rosenberry, he presided over the meeting. Ben Kratz gave the Invocation and Butch Ethington served as Cashier. Carl Philo was Sgt. at Arms. Yolanda Hoffman and John Massih served as greeters. We had several announcements, presentations, and a new member introduction. Bob Kully introduced John Starita who gave some history about Native Americans in Nebraska.
Omaha West Rotary Club Secretary Report for March 29, 2019:
This past Friday, we had several visiting Rotarians including Gary Bren from Downtown, Nizar Mamdani from Naples, and Roxy Orr and Mark Taylor from Suburban. We also had many guests! Butch Ethington brought Dr. John Kugler. Lori Benton invited Heidi Kelly. Mark Ellsworth brought Jaren Tate. Joe Finnegan invited Noah Hoffman. Bev Karrer brought her husband Dr. Bill Karrer. And finally, Deirdre Milobar brought several guests – Colm Breathnach, Leon Milobar, Barb Levitan.
For good news, Lori Benton passed part 1 of the Rotary Leadership Institute. She also convinced her father to enter his 1929 Ford pickup into the upcoming Rotary auto show. John Philo’s son is going to be attending the University of Tulsa this fall. Carl Greiner’s daughter is going to be the Director of the ICU at the University of Minnesota. His son is going to be the Director of cardiovascular department, also at the University of Minnesota. Yolanda Hoffman was glad to be back at Rotary and her medical condition has improved tremendously. Martie Cordaro is glad that the exhibition games are over. They set an attendance record with 9,300. The regular season also starts on April 9th. Blake Martin is also glad that Yolanda is back. Nizar Mandami on behalf of UNMC just signed a MOU to help build a cancer hospital near Shanghai, China. Holly Gillespie’s brother is in China to adopt a 3 year old daughter. Her sister was also diagnosed with cancer, but the latest tests shows the cancer is gone!
Nick taught everyone the Heimlich maneuver and wished everyone a good week.
Last week Bonnie Gill introduced us to new member Deirdre Milobar. Deirdre was born and educated in Ireland.
She attended St. Patrick's College of Education at the National University of Ireland & Majored in Special Education. She then taught in Dublin and Cashel for 9 years.
Deirdre received a Rotary Fellowship to study at UNO. She earned a Masters' of Reading Diagnosis and Remediation as well as a Master's in Learning Disabilities. She went on to earn her PhD in Educational Administration-Special Education.
She became a Reading Specialist with Council Bluffs Community Schools until 1998. She also served as Principal of Madonna School Omaha (Special Education) 1998-2003 and then worked for Omaha Public Schools Special Education until retirement.
Deirdre is an active community member having served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA Maple St, Community Alliance, and the Omaha Education Association. She currently serves on theCommunity Alliance Committee for their annual fundraiser "Breaking the Silence".
She is also a Past President of Irish American Cultural Institute & the Nebraska Association for Disabilities. She is married to Leon Milobar. He is District Director of Small Business Administration.
In her free time, Deirdre enjoys traveling, reading, walking, quilting, lunching with friends and sampling good wine. Welcome, Deirdre!
